The greatest adventure of all time begins with Star Trek, the incredible story of a young crew’s maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk (Chris Pine), is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock (Zachary Quinto), was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before.

5Great movie  Mar 19, 2010
I love this movie. I ordered it from closeoutvideo and they sent it to me in very good time. But the disc stalled during the movie and closeoutvideo gave me a refund immediately. What nice people.

3A good popcorn movie so long as you don't stop and think about it.  Mar 19, 2010
The special effects are a strong point of the movie and they do their best to not let up on the action. I give this part a 5 star. Watching even the opening sequence of the battle with the USS Kelvin and seeing the startship unleash all that firepower was a plus. It definitely wasn't old series with a pair of phaser beams.

The acting gets a three star from me. I liked the "chip on his shoulder" Kirk. He was suitably brash. Spock alternated between being a wooden puppet and then a drama queen. It's like they tried to do too much with his character over the course of the movie. McCoy was a hoot, probably the most true to the original character. Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty were underutilized and mostly window dressing. Uhura was portrayed well.

The plot gets a whopping 2 stars. Along the lines of Independence Day and stories along the same line, you should just watch the movie and not try to think too much about it. A time traveling divergent reboot opens up a whole can of worms. It's easy to see why they chose the deleted scenes for deletion. They would have made the plot even
more difficult to stomach.

The screenwriters went out of their way to ensure that all the main characters were "special." Things like Chekov leaving the bridge to run down to the transporter room when there is an enemy ship right in front of them or the rapid promotion of Kirk, Spock, and everyone else from cadets to command staff. (I believe he had the con at that time.) I won't go into all the major plot spoilers and plot holes, I'm sure you could go to the 1 and 2 star reviews for that, but suffice to say there are many.

On the positive side, it is uptempo and doesn't stop the action so someone can monologue about the morality of thier predicament. The director just keeps the action rolling.

So, if you're looking for a roller coaster ride with lots of things blowing up and everyone jockeying to get in everyone else's face, you'll enjoy the movie. If you want a deep plot go elsewhere.

5Great movie and a great Blue-ray disc for everyone  Mar 18, 2010
This as good as it gets for a Sci-Fi action movie. Destined to be a must have for Star Trek fans or "non-fans" a like.

5purists might not appreciate the bold new direction, which is understandable  Mar 17, 2010
on a whim,i decided to see this latest film in the Star Trek Universe.i'm sure glad i did.it's an origin story of sorts,a prequel(sort of)to the original Star Trek TV series, and obviously all previous films.some things in the mythology have been a bit tweaked, but that's why it works.it's not the old tired formula.there were some good Trek films in the past,a few excellent and a few not so good.but this one blows them all out of the water,in my opinion.not only is the story good, but the acting is stellar.there are also some very funny moments here.and the action is first rate.for me,this is easily the best Star Trek film yet.if you're a purist, you might not like it,which is understandable.if not though, you might really enjoy it.for me,it's an easy 5* rating

3Not your standard trek film, but still a worthy movie to watch  Mar 16, 2010
JJ Abram's Star Trek is a good movie. But that's all I can really give it. It is definitely not in the Top 3 best Trek movies of all time, nor I would say its in the top 100 best Sci-Fi flicks of all time. Lets go over the pros and cons.

Pros
J.J. did a masterful job of rejuvenating the series, and was able to get the movie to reach out to people who wouldn't normally ever sit to down to watch a trek episode. Every non-trekker that I have spoken with, only had praise for the movie. So, kudos, J.J.

This movie is just fun to watch too. The actors are completely into their roles, and there's plenty of action, comedy, and romance to go around for everyone. HOWEVER, i think you must be somewhat of a fan of the sci-fi/action genre to consider watching this movie. If you are looking for any critique on present day ideologies, philosophies, etc, you're not going to find it here. This movie is a straight up popcorn flick and does an excellent job of keeping those eyes glued to the screen.

Cons
(Time to let the Trekkie side come out of me a lil)

Pretty much most of my beef starts right around the halfway point in the movie. I have officially ranked the first half of the movie as a GEM. Then, unfortunately, the movie unravels completely. More often during the second half do the action scenes drive the plot, and unfortunately not the other way around.

The writers also felt the need to take the best bits of Star Trek, and somehow fit it into the entire movie. This ranged from the Vulcan neck pinch to the Kobyashu maru to some planet called Delta Vega that appeared in the first episode ever, to......the list continues. It was as if they wanted some viewer to start pointing at the screen and say "oh yeah! that's a famous star trek gag!" or "that's so star trek". It's like fitting all James Bond villains/gadgets/gizmos into one reboot movie.

The writers also violate something that is probably a cardinal sin somewhere in some writing handbook, which was to explain the entire plot of a movie in one flashback scene. Kind of ridiculous. I bet it probably had something to do with the writers trying to figure out how to add Nimoy into the movie.

There's also nothing intellectually stimulating about this movie. There are no political, societal, moral undertones in the movie, something that is so integral to the Trek mythology. That's not to say all movies are like this. Wrath of Khan(STII) and First Contact(STVIII) were straight up action as well(just better movies :) ) But I feel that is something that they should have incorporated into the script, to let newbies know how it sets itself apart from other genres.

The villain is weak. I don't think its Eric Bana's fault though. I just think the character wasn't believable enough due to the poor writing. You might be let down here as well.

As a sci-fi flick, it's ultimately forgettable. But I still do recommend this to any fan of action and sci-fi movies, as you will be thoroughly entertained.
