This just might blow your mind... Mar 19, 2010 I know that it's hard to believe, but things that were released on HD DVD are *still in HD*! Isn't that amazing?! My parents bought an HD DVD player 2 years ago when the format war was still raging (it's still a win because it's the best up-converter for regular DVD that I've seen). I've since grabbed up very, very cheap HD DVDs for 2 and 3 dollars (including Batman Begins, Hot Fuzz, Lost in Translation, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in LV, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Planet Earth, and many other good movies). As it stands, you could buy an HD DVD player, Planet Earth, and a few other movies all for less than Planet Earth cost originally. I play them with an Xbox 360 HD DVD drive connected to my PC on my 1080p TV and they look fantastic.
I appreciate people dumping old technology, but if it makes no sense to scrap a collection just to make a lateral move to blu ray. Search for HD DVDs, see how many movies that you like (and would buy) that are on HD DVD, it might actually make a little sense for you to start an "obsolete" collection. I know it kind of sounds nuts, but it could be a wise investment if you would have bought the movies anyway.
That being said, this particular HD DVD is just stunning. Even if there were no narration, it's splendid and, dare I say, majestic. I have barely had the chance to watch it, because it simply demands that you stare... that you stare with your jaw agape. This is a stunning, stunning visual feast.
(P.S. I do have a blu ray player now, but I'm not about to replace perfectly good HD movies! :) )
Incredible, jaw-dropping video Mar 18, 2010 This is surely among the most brilliant accomplishments in the history of television. The BBC set out to produce the ultimate, definitive look at our planet, and succeeded beyond belief. You will gape in awe at what you see, at times even find yourself holding your breath, and you'll scratch your head in amazement that it was even possible to capture it. It's all the more stunning in Blu-Ray on a big 1080p monitor.
Breathtaking Mar 18, 2010 Simply the most spectacular nature documentary I've ever seen. The footage is beautiful, especially in blu-ray format. They show you things you've never seen before, utilizing new technologies and infinite patience. Tragically, the 'behind the scenes' stuff that was featured on the original TV run has been left out, but the series is still very re-watchable.
A note to parents: my five-year-old loved the show, but was a bit scared by some of the grittier scenes, which we 'fast-forwarded' through.
