The coloring on the puzzle is paper. If you have a little one that puts things in his/her mouth, the paper will immediately begin to wrinkle up. It is puzzling to me why the manufacturer of this jumbo puzzle, made for little ones, would do such a thing, especially when food-based paint is also an option.

I am a therapist and use this puzzle with some of the toddlers I work with. The nobs are nice and big and I have plastic fruit that I use for matching pieces. Because it has more pieces, I can use it for a small group and have them take turns. The pieces are a little rough on the edges and don't always slide into the slots easily but this seems to be improving the more I use it. Kids really love it!!

backing started to peel back but my daughter likes the big knobs. I don't think I would recommend this for young toddlers.
